Meet 3 year old Barney,

Many of you have followed Barney’s unbelievably long and very sad journey at this rescue and also watched his incredible transformation. Barney has suffered a vast amount of trauma in his short life and arrived to us a completely shut down dog that wouldn’t even eat. Barney was initially adopted as a Romanian stray after having endured harrowing abuse as a puppy, abuse that no dog should ever have to go through.

After spending 2 years in a home, he was relinquished to our Kent kennels after the household got busier with a new-born baby and Barney was not able to cope with being thrown in at the deep end. Kennels absolutely crucified this dog, and his future was looking very bleak. There were days where we had run out of options as to how to make progress with him and there were many times he had the staff in tears. Every single member of this rescue has put their heart and soul into this chap’s rehabilitation and we are so very proud to even be writing this advert.

Before we start his advert, here are a few words form his trainer:

“Barney is one of the kindest, sweetest dogs I have ever worked with. Beneath his nervousness lies a true gentleman who simply wants to be loved and cuddled. Whoever adopt Barney will gain not just an incredible dog, but a loyal companion. His fun, cheeky personality is starting to shine through as he builds confidence. He is only just learning that it is okay to let loose, play with his toys and enjoy life. With patience and understanding Barney will blossom into an extraordinary companion. I am genuinely envious of whoever is lucky enough to welcome this beautiful boy into their home. He is a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered”.

Barney is still a nervous dog, but he is not aggressive in any way and would rather choose flight instead of fight. He has previously been a very misunderstood dog but in fact, all Barney wants is to bond with somebody. Due to his nervous nature, we are looking for an experienced, quiet home that has a good understanding of handling nervous dogs, are firm and calm and that can offer him guidance when he needs it. Adopters that are home enough to dedicate time to his journey and training is a must. He can live with teenagers + and can also live with cats. Barney would absolutely benefit from living with another well rounded, calm, young/middle age dog as he takes a lot of confidence and guidance from being around them and this has greatly benefited his rehab. A home in a quiet area with lots of countryside walks is a must, built up towns won’t be considered. Active homes will enjoy Barney as he likes his two long walks a day. Anyone wanting to adopt Barney should understand the time, patience and calmness it takes to rehabilitate a dog with his trauma history. If you are a first-time dog owner/novice handler, Barney is not the boy for you. If you are into dog well-being and training Barney will be an absolute cracker to own.

Since moving into home boarding training, he has flourished into such a good boy. He walks beautifully on a lead, is house trained, can travel in a car, is good with other dogs and is happy to stand and be petted by strangers (although still nervy of tall men), a far cry from the dog that came to us at the start of the summer.

Inside the home Barney requires a separate area for him to be able to have as his safe space, e.g. an area that can be baby gated so that he never feels any pressure to interact with visitors (although has proven himself to be fine with them when he is not pressurised to socialise). 6ft plus garden fencing is a must for a dog like Barney.

Barney has come on so much we think in the future he could absolutely be a dog
adopters can take to cafes, on trains and in busier places. The progress he makes each day is huge. We would prefer Barney stay within a 45-minute drive of Canterbury, Kent to ensure adopters are able to get training support should they ever require it. His adoption comes with lifetime free training and telephone guidance should it ever be required as well as 5 weeks free pet insurance. He is healthy, neutered, vaccinated, chipped, flead and wormed.

There may seem like a lot of criteria to this advert, but this boy has been let down so many times we aren’t going to let it happen to him again. In the right hands he is going to make someone unbelievably happy.

Please get in touch if you think you could be Barney’s happy ever after, the one he was always meant to have.
